Summer Scorchy, Get Shortyfeatured

Today was a scorcher, but when I opened my wardrobe it all looked totally uninspiring – too Springtime for this Summer heat. Until, out of the corner of my eye, I spied a little Maison Scotch mini-skirt. Teamed with a simple grey tee number and my shiny gold Soludos espadrilles, I was ready to go. The sun was shining, pegs out, this was going to be a good day! Feeling like a yummy mummy, after a fashion(!), off I went on a play date with a spring in my step – I had that Friday feeling!

On my way to the play date, however, I had to fill up my car with fuel. I whisked the girls into the garage to pay but, on my return, I had to hunt for keys while juggling two sprightly children. Little D on my hip and Big D tugging my arm off. Without even thinking to protect my modesty, I bent over to root through my ridiculously full nappy bag. Standing up, I realised I’d given two passing men the full moon! Note to self: do not wear mini skirts with children in tow! Damn this heatwave, give me back my jeans!

In light of this unfortunate incident, tonight I’ve been scouring the internet for shorts – my new mummy uniform of choice during July and August – to avoid another cheeky moment! Here are my six best buys for keeping you cool – while protecting your modesty.

Selected Femme Mia Shorts
, Available at or in-store in Primrose Hill, Woodbridge Suffolk and Burnham Market, Norfolk. Every girl needs a great denim short and this pair are a great length for getting up and down off the floor with babes in arms.

Zara, Loose Fit Skort £12.99. Bright, fun, floaty and flirty. This fab skort (a portmanteau of short and skirt, obvs.) would look great with a Breton Strip top a la Duchess of Cambridge.  Also, amazing value!

Maison Scotch Stretch Canvas Shorts £69.95. These longer length summer shorts are made in a stretch-cotton and are a slim fit so would be really slimming of the leg. They come in some lovely prints.

Reiss, Felix printed shorts £89.00. These beautiful A-line shorts have a stunning tropical design which is totes in this season. This is a great option if you want to wear shorts in the evening. They’d look fab with a silk blouse and heels and then, when you have toted them around, retire them to your daytime wardrobe with a simple tee for those special play dates when you want to impress other Mummies (you know the ones I mean!).

Jack Wills, Downing Utility Shorts £19.00. I know I should’ve grown out of Jack Wills years ago, but the great quality means I can’t help going back. Even if you want their pieces to fall apart so you can buy new they don’t, so these are great for those soccer mums that have to get down and dirty in the park.

Abercrombie & Fitch Roll up military shorts, £38.00. A true classic that will go with everything in your wardrobe and just a great colour!

So, if like me you’re popping to the shops over the weekend to prepare for the heatwave, why not get shorty?
